My Why – What’s Yours?

I recently read an account from a safety person whose father passed away at 80. He passed away on the operating table
whilst surgeons attempted to address ongoing problems from a back injury sustained 40 years before at the workplace.

Wow – one can only imagine the pain and suffering over such an extended period of time for that man and his family, and for his life to end so tragically…

Of course, his story is just one of countless others that most people just sail past in blissful ignorance.

It made me think, actually it just reminded me why I do what I do and the need to be borderline violently aggressive in supporting clients to generate real and meaningful change.

Yes – this sometimes means being the bearer of bad news, cutting through the corporate crap, taking sides and challenging personal agendas or empires, but in the end, I know that the independent objectivity and truth I bring to the equation is an important ingredient to more informed, strategic and over-due improvements.

Of course, this is just me, my personality and background – drawing on my strengths, tackling piece-by-piece a very complicated puzzle in my own “special” way (and certainly making mistakes along the way).

For my colleagues in risk management, be it workplace safety, bullying, contractor management or one of the many other important risk disciplines, it is so important you do not lose sight of your “why” or the “real reason” to take on the status quo and push every day.

The visceral impact felt by so many now and the inevitable future, must fortify your resolve, allow you to bounce back from roadblocks and discouraging moments we all have, and keep agitating for better outcomes.

Reminding yourself of your true purpose will give you remarkable resilience.

Don’t hold back, you only have a limited time to influence, make an impact and leave your legacy. We may never see the fruits of our labour – that is the nature of the beast, but it does not make it any less important – as many families most assuredly would attest.
