Too smart won’t get you too far
I was prompted to write this article after reading a review of a workplace safety book, written by a “safety expert”. I read the review twice and I honestly could not understand what he was saying. The guy was just so clever that my skin started to crawl and my head started to itch. I closed the tab on my computer quickly so I would not catch something…
What really bugged me, was not so much that I was in vocabulary-deficit (I am sure there is no such thing – but you probably understand where I am going), but that this level of genius is almost always superfluous to the needs of most companies.
In fact, this level of technical expertise can often hurt a company as it is discredited as too complicated and not in a language capable of being meaningfully applied by the at-risk workers.
I can understand that due to frustration and ignorance, businesses will turn to such “experts”, but overwhelmingly, the issues to be resolved are far simpler.
There is no point in turning to bells and whistles solutions when the core elements of your system have not been designed and/or implemented well.
If only businesses could really “own” the basic things, optimise them and sweat the small stuff later, they would be startled by the transformation.
